Recently, I bought an external HDD. I noticed that it had certain files on it by default when I put it in, and I'm wondering if it's okay to erase them.

I would leave them alone, considering the minuscule amount of room they occupy. If you still want to delete the default files, it is safer to format your external HDD on your computer. You can use some main formats on your external HDD:NTFS, HFS+, exFAT, APFS, and FAT32. Use NTFS if you solely utilize Windows and intend to use your disk for File History backups on a Windows PC. Most hard disks are already preformatted for the native file system of Windows. How to format your external HDD on a Windows PC?
1. Connect the external hard drive, then launch Windows Explorer on your computer.
2. From the drop-down menu, select "Format" when you right-click the external HDD.
3. Choose the desired file system, label your drive under "Volume label," and make sure the "Quick Format" checkbox is selected.
4. Press "Start" to format your disk on the computer.
5. When the procedure is finished, use Windows Explorer and access the external HDD.
You should always remember this method in case encounter some external HDD issues, such as HDD corruption and virus attack.
